So you decide to set up a patio but don’t know where to start? Here are the basic steps to help you make the deck your own:

  1. Remove grass cover (approx. of shovel depth)
  2. Lay the geotextile felt (against grass growth)
  3. Use the chippings to the required level (base height)
  4. Laying large pavement-type tiles (at required distances)
  5. Attach adjustable height supports (pedestals)
  6. Putting wood joists of frame (recommended 2 levels)
  7. Adjust and to level height (flat frame surface)
  8. Fixing the frame with screws (if 2 frame levels)
  9. Fixing and finally oiling decking boards (any coating)

We have identified the key steps in preparing the right foundation. As with any of the items listed above, it is imperative that they will be sequenced. Equally important is the wood from which the deck will be constructed. Peoples it is often thought, that any kind of wood even already used, can fit on the deck. Unfortunately, improperly picked wood can turn all the work onto the wind before time, because the boards can be skewed, squeak, rot, looks terribly and need frequent repair.

Choosing the right wood for your deck

Considering that this home space will be constantly exposed to moisture, heat-treated wood or wood composite is best suited. Still, heat-treated wood is like the middle of gold – the best value for money on the market today. Thus, heat-treated wood is completely stable and does not shrink or expand, decompose or peel like “live” wood. It has no resins and no sacks of sugar, so the wood is free of fungus, does not mildew or rot. Such wood is much more resistant and does not change properties up to 20 years. Heat-treated wood is unaffected by atmospheric and temperature changes, making it ideal for our volatile climate and for places such as patios. By deciding to use heat-treated wood, you also support an environmentally friendly lifestyle.
